Brits have become a tech-savvy people who embrace all kinds of gadgets, with some even taking out unsecured loans to afford the latest devices.

Technology journalist Zara Rabinowicz said the UK may have slow broadband speeds compared with other countries, but nevertheless we are a society which "runs on multimedia", from radio and TV to social networking.

"We have a strong working culture, and technology is seen as a way to aid this, as checking emails or content on your phone can help minimise time at the desk and lead to better time management," she went on to say.

According to a report from Ofcom, the UK saw the highest growth in Europe in smartphone take-up in the past year, with a 70 per cent rise in subscribers compared with 11 per cent in Italy.

This could suggest that more people are getting unsecured loans to cover the cost of their technology habits.
